Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, pump the brakes. If you are a beginner and looking to get started online, let’s not go assuming that you’re gonna start generating 30, 40, 50, 100 leads every single month from your online. That’s not how it works.

So in this video, I wanna break down exactly how it works, and what you should be doing if you are a beginner online. Let’s dive right in.

What is up, beautiful people? My name is Mats Moy. And for the best advice on generating roofing leads online, you are in the right place. Two things. Subscribe, hit the notification bell so that you get notified when I release a new video just like this one each and every single Wednesday.

For those of you guys who don’t know me, again, my name is Mats Moy, and I’m the owner of Moy Consulting, a company I created. And last year alone we helped over 120 roofing contractors get online and start producing leads.

By the end of this video, I wanna give you a few tips that are gonna help you get started if you are looking to get online this year, in 2021.

1. Lower your expectations

Tip number one, lower your expectations. A lot, I’ve seen a lot of people get into the online space expecting the world, and very similar to what I said earlier in this video, expecting to right out the gate start getting 30, 40, 50, 100 leads from their online. And we need to come back down to earth a little bit.

If you were getting five, 10 leads every single month by not being online, let’s not assume that you’re gonna get online and snap of a finger everything is gonna change. That’s not the case, all right. So lower your expectations down a little bit.

The market can be overly saturated

Now, depending on what market you’re in, it can be overly saturated. Now online is not brand new, you’re just brand new to it. So understand that companies have been doing this for years. They’ve been online for years. And when you’ve been online for years and doing the right things to stay online, then you’ve pretty much monopolized the industry, right?

You’re like the go-to company, you, and a few other contractors are the go-to companies within the area when it comes to online. So don’t think to yourself that you’re gonna start paying a company a couple of hundred dollars a month, and they’re gonna get you on the first page of Google. B-S. That’s a whole bunch of BS. And if you don’t believe me, give it a shot.

40 leads for $100? Not gonna happen

So, again, for those of you guys looking to cough up just a couple hundred bucks to get 30, 40 leads, it’s not gonna happen. Let’s try and make sense of this logically for a second. I’m going off of just random numbers. So let’s try to break this down for a little bit. So let’s use a real-life example here.

For those of you guys who are thinking you can probably get away with 30 leads for like 400 bucks, that works out to roughly like $13 a lead, by the way.

If a roof is worth maybe $2,000, $3,000 in profits for each individual roof – for some of you guys, it’s much more, much more than that but I’m just using some plain numbers here. If a roof is worth $2,000 to $3,000 for your company, and you are paying someone to generate 30 leads for you every single month, and the most you wanna pay for this is $400.

Compare the cost of marketing with the return on investment

What’s the return on investment here? It’s a jillion dollars. It’s way too much. It just doesn’t make sense logically, right? Somebody is getting ripped off, and it’s probably the person doing the advertising if you’re only paying $400 and you’re walking away with $2,000, $3,000 per roof project that you’re actually closing on.

Let’s say you close at a conservative, a super conservative 10%. 10% of the 30 leads that you got. That’s three jobs. Now on average, for each one of these jobs, after you pay your labor, after you pay the materials, you’re walking away with $2,000, $3,000 times three. You’re looking at about $6,000 to $9,000 in profits.

Take away the 400 that you spent, that’s an absurd amount, especially when you start to scale that. And this is me using a conservative number like 10% that you closed. It’s probably a little bit more like 30%. 40% on average is what I’ve seen.

If you’re paying low, you may be paying for mostly duds

So let’s lower the expectations a bit, guys. You’re not gonna be spending or paying $13 per lead. That’s just not realistic. And if you are paying $13 per lead, the leads that you’re getting are probably not all of good quality. The majority of them are duds.

So really it’s probably more than neighborhood of $60, $70, $80, maybe $100 per lead that you’re getting. And this is in a very low competition market.

When you start to step into Texas, Colorado, you’re more in the neighborhood of $200 to $300 per lead. That’s what I’ve personally seen. And I’m talking good quality leads here, guys.

Let’s discount the ones that are duds, guys that you couldn’t even get ahold of, guys who didn’t know who you were as a company, why you’re even calling them. Let’s not count those, because those are not real leads.

And if you really tally up the numbers, that’s probably what you’re more looking to spend. And that sounds more reasonable for the quality of the lead that you’re getting, as well as how much you can potentially make off of these leads, assuming you can close those deals.

2. Do not start marketing online unless you’re ready to commit

The next tip I have for you is do not start marketing your company online unless you are ready to commit. This is not a place to half-ass anything, excuse my French. You need to be fully committed to this thing so that you can see it all the way through and start reaping the benefits. Do not take your business online.

If you’re looking to spend a couple of dollars here, a couple of dollars there, see how things work out. Let’s find the right company to work with you guys. And that may or may not be me, shameless plug. It may or may not be me, but find the right company suited for your company so that you’re able to get online and fully commit to making this happen.

What do I mean by fully committed? I mean, you need to dedicate yourself to making sure you supply the right images for your online presence. You commit to reaching out to customers, asking for reviews, right? Getting committed into, if you’re gonna start social media, get into social media. Don’t start for like a week, two weeks, and not see any results, and then give up.

Assess your decisions

The same thing with your online. Start and see one, two, three, four, five, six months, not see any results and give up. You need to pivot if need be. You’re gonna have to assess to see what’s working, what’s not working, and making the right decisions going forward so that you ultimately get to a point where you’re producing those leads.

Do not think to yourself that online does not work, because it works. It produces leads if you are doing the right things. So commit to it, find the right company, and make something happen for your online presence.

3. You can’t outsource everything

And for those of you guys who think you can absolutely outsource everything to a marketing company, not gonna happen. You’re gonna have to do some heavy lifting yourself. And when I say yourself, I mean within your own organization. It doesn’t have to be you but within your own organization.

So supplying photos, videos, putting your face in front of your company. These are things that need to be done if you want to have a better shot at closing more leads, getting more leads altogether, getting your for customers to leave you reviews. That’s the stuff that you need to do if you wanna maximize how many reviews you actually get. That you can outsource, but they will not do the job that you can do because you have that personal relationship with these customers.

4. The cost depends on your market

And my last tip for you guys here is to answer the most famous question. How much? How much? And the truth is I cannot give you an answer to that question, simply because it depends on your market.

You wouldn’t pay as much as somebody in Texas would pay, as much as someone in Colorado would pay, in Connecticut would pay, in Ontario, it’s all different based on the market.

So if you want to produce leads, the only way for you to find out is to get started or ask some of the competitors in your area, assuming you have a good relationship and they’re open to giving you these answers. Ask them what they’re paying in terms of lead, true lead cost. Not the duds, the duds should be added into the overall cost.

But ask people around to see if you can get a straight answer because there’s no way for me to tell you how much. There is no set number for every single roofing company out there. So “how much?” is an invalid question.
